There is lots to do on Tetepare Island so we suggest at least 5 nights or preferably a week in you wish to visit neighbouring islands. Some suggested itineraries are below but these are a guide only. Some activities are conservation or weather dependent. Tetepare is a conservation area and the animals are wild. We cannot guarantee sightings of particular species.Â
6 Day (5 night) Explore Tetepare Island
Day 1
Arrive in Munda and travel straight out to Tetepare Island in a private boat transfer. Accompany the rangers during their weekly turtle monitoring within the Marine Protected Area.Â
Day 2
Snorkel the edge of the deep water passages within the Marine Protected Area, see turtles, harmless reef sharks and amazing coral reef diversity. Relax in a hammock in the afternoon and watch the Tetepare white eyes and sunbirds flit around your bungalow.Â
Day 3
Wake to the sound of bird song and distant crashing waves on the outer reef. Go bird watching with a local guide and see hornbills, fig parrots and monarchs. Visit Lokuru village on neighbouring Rendova Island and learn about life in the village. View and/or purchase some beautiful wooden carvings with distinctive shell inlay from local artisans
Day 4
Take a bush medicine tour with one of our local guides and learn how traditional medicine is used to treat common illnesses. Walk through virgin rainforest and let our local guides point out the native wildlife. Watch the sun set from the visitor wharf over the crystal clear waters of the lagoon.
Day 5
Accompany the rangers on a patrol of the island and watch for large pods of playful dolphins at Livutana or try your hand at trawl line fishing and catch a trevally, bonito tuna or rainbow fish for dinner.
Day 6
Take an early morning snorkel straight off the wharf, let your guide point out some of diverse marine life including the giant clam. After breakfast, travel back to Munda on a private boat transfer and fly home or continue on to Gizo, Seghe or Honiara.Â
8 Day (7 night) Tetepare and Rendova Island Adventure
Day 1
Arrive in Munda and relax at Agnes Lodge or travel straight to Tetepare.
Day 2
Wake early and go for a birdwatching tour with a local guide to see hornbills, endemic Tetepare white eyes and eclectus parrots. Cool off with a snorkel in the Marine Protected Area on Tetepare Island. Look for schools of colourful bump-headed parrot fish or hawksbill turtles feeding on coral.
Day 3
Take a walk to the crocodile lake through the rainforest and see the giant strangler fig trees. Snorkel in the Deep Blue Drop Off near Mbo point on the way home.
Day 4
Assist the rangers with their monitoring on a patrol around the island. See local fish, lowland rainforest and tiny Sarumana Island. Stop off at the remains of historic headhunting villages and see stone wall fortresses and look outs where warriors kept watch for war canoes from raiding tribes.
Day 5
Walk to the huge strangler fig tree and learn about the traditional bush medicines still used today. Relax with a book in the hammock before taking a boat out in the lagoon on dusk to search for dugongs in the seagrass meadows.
Day 6
Learn traditional cooking and basket-weaving from local women including the motu oven. Sit on the visitor wharf in the evening watching the sunset and looking for the distinctive heads of green turtles emerging from the calm water as they feed in the lagoon.
Day 7
Travel to remote Baniata village on nearby Rendova Island, a traditional village on a wide black sand beach where Leatherback Turtles nest. Stay in a specially made guest leafhouse and walk the beach at night looking for nesting Leatherbacks.
Day 8
Travel to Munda where you can relax by the sea, scuba dive or visit world war II relics. Stay at Agnes Lodge or fly on to Gizo or Honiara.Â
10 Day (9 night) Tetepare and Marovo Lagoon (includes scuba diving)
Day 1
Arrive in Munda in the morning and travel to Tetepare by private boat transfer. Snorkel in the lagoon in the afternoon and look for green and hawksbill turtles.
Day 2
Snorkel Vasara Passage to look for Eagle Rays and Bump Headed Parrotfish in the Marine Protected Area. Take a boat to swim in the freshwater pools at Barora.
Day 3
Walk through virgin primary rainforest and let our expert local guides look for birds such as the endemic Tetepare White Eye, Pygmy Parrots, Hornbills and Yellow Legged Pigeon. Take an evening walk to hear the night sounds of the rainforest and use a torch see nocturnal rainforest animals such as giant coconut crabs, frogs and fireflies.
Day 4
Take a bush medicine tour with one of our local guides and learn how traditional medicine is used to treat common illnesses. Relax in a hammock at the lookout in the afternoon overlooking the lagoon.
Day 5
Patrol a leatherback turtle beach with the rangers and search for nests (Queru Beach season is Oct-Apr). Cool off with a refreshing swim under the secret waterfall at Queru Beach.
Day 6
Travel by private boat transfer to Marovo Lagoon, passing the Hele Islands and the emerald green Tetepare rainforest on the way. Stop at Kupa Point for snorkelling and then travel on to overnight at one of the local resorts such Vanua Kino situated right over the water of the calm Marovo Lagoon.Â
Day 7
Stay at Vanua Kino and visit local villages, rainforest and rivers. Dine on fresh seafood and snorkel directly out the front of your room.
Day 8
Travel to Uepi Dive Resort and dive some of the most beautiful reefs in the world. The chance to see manta rays and hammerhead sharks or just relax in a hammock outside your self contained bungalow.
Day 9
Scuba diving and snorkelling in the world famous Marovo Lagoon. Other activities may also be available.Â
Day 10
Stay another few nights at Uepi or fly from Seghe on to Gizo or back to Honiara.
