We are grateful to the many organisations and individuals who support the Tetepare Project through conservation activities on Tetepare and off-island community projects such as scholarships, sustainable livelihoods initiatives, and community projects. The Tetepare Descendants’ Association rewards its member for conserving the island by helping to provide educational scholarships and alternative income options to logging including managing an Ecolodge and employing rangers. Tetepare has established an endowment fund in the US to provide long term support for the project. Donations to this endowment are held by the Conservation Agreement Fund (CAF) and contribute to TDA’s governance and conservation work. We urgently need donations to protect Tetepare, please consider donating to our endowment fund through the Conservation Agreement Fund in the US or for tax deductible donations in Australia you can donate through ZoosSA.
We are indebted to the Conservation Agreement Fund, AusAid and Nia Tero for their help establishing our endowment fund. Previously supporters of Tetepare include the EU who provided a micro-grant to allow the TDA to establish its successful Tetepare Island Ecolodge and sustainable livelihoods projects. WWF continues to support TDA whenever it can through grants for conservation and community workshops. The American Museum of Natural History, NZ Aid, Bolton Food, Conservation Agreement Fund, Conservation Ark, Global Leadership Foundation, and NOAA have all contributed to the TDA’s conservation programs. WCF (Wildlife Conservation Fund) also supports Tetepare through logistical and administrative support and US Fish and Wildlife provide valuable support for protection of Leatherback turtle nests. We continue to ask for support to maintain our conservation programs and grow our endowment fund to the point where it can support our activities.
Volunteers
If you are interested in volunteering at Tetepare and have skills in conservation, ecotourism, grant management, accounting, ranger training or sustainable livelihoods, you can volunteer through the Australian Volunteers International (AVI) . AVI supports the project by providing technical advisors to work with the TDA on 12-18 month placements. Contact us or AVI for more information on current placement opportunities. Project patrons John Read and Katherine Moseby ([email protected] or [email protected]) have been long-time volunteer supporters of the TDA. John and Katherine are Australian-based biologists who visit the island at least once a year to provide advice and guidance. John has written an acclaimed book about their experience entitled “The Last Wild Island: Saving Tetepare”. Proceeds from the book go towards supporting the TDA’s conservation programs. CUSO (Canadian University Services Overseas) previously supported the Tetepare project by providing four technical advisors to the project and building a leaf house for their accommodation.
Several organisations and individuals have contributed to TDA’s educational scholarships for local children from TDA communities. These scholarships are a benefit to the community for conserving Tetepare Island. Among the past and previous donors to this important scholarship program are the Honeypot Foundation, Zoos SA , Conservation Agreement Fund, Elser Foundation, WWF, former TDA-technical advisors Laurie Wein and Dave Argument from Canada and the Ella George Children’s fund, through Conservation International.
